The Artist & Collectors Gallery is about giving supportors of the preservation of our South American natural environment the opportunity to purchase collector's art and craft that are unique. All the money earned through the gallery goes to the aid of preserving the natural environment by supporting efforts such as the preservation of forest fruit trees and orchids in Moraro. All of the pieces are unique in that they are carefully produced by skilled indigenous artist & crafts individuals with particular interest in preserving the local environment and culture. FOREST KEEPER ARTIST

Claudette De Vieira Fleming is an artist of indigenous South American ancestry. She is helping in her ancestral homeland, to preserve traditional forest preservation techniques by encouraging traditional indigenous individuals, who are skilled in these techniques to practice their skills. She also helps to preserve these practices by promoting them. As a collector she has a collection of pieces of authentic indigenous art and craft. She also works with local people in sustaining and promoting traditional indigenous culture.

These traditional methods of forest preservation is being promoted in the UK by Claudette who is London based. She helps by exhibiting traditionally and contemporary forest arts and crafts together with other topics on forest preservation issues.

She sells pieces of her work in the UK, of which proceeds go toward maintaining forest preservation techniques.

Bio-degradable Crafts

Authentic Lokono pouch used as wall hanging as well as a carrying pouch. Local people use such pouches to conceal small valuables. Hand woven from sustainable sourced organic cane material and coloured with vegetable dye, each item is unique.

Traditional baskets are hand made, using the coil and stitch method. One basket may take months to make depending on the size. First straw has to be gathered from the Ite palm, then stripped, washed and dried, all the while being tended. Colours are obtained from natural vegetable dye. This is a separate process to the initial gathering.

Jewellery

Before Europeans came, our peoples made beads from seeds and other natural materials. Glass beads were traded when Indigenous peoples first contacted Europeans. Since then, these beads became popular decorative elements in crafting; mainly in jewellery. Today, fine jewellery is still made from seeds and beads. Each piece in this collection is individually made and has its own qualities.

Embroidery

In recent times weaving has extended to hand embroidery which is a different form of craft. These pieces were all done lovingly by hand and from patterns that were created at home.
